An Interview with Sail Croatia Skipper Bruno Novotny: Sustainable Nautical Tourism

An Interview with Sail Croatia Skipper Bruno Novotny: Sustainable Nautical Tourism

In the fast-evolving world of nautical tourism, sustainability is no longer a niche concern - it’s a necessity. Green Sail is tackling this challenge head-on through partner education and advocacy, with initiatives such as the new Sustainability for Skippers and Crew Online Management Course. This course equips nautical professionals with the practical tools they need to reduce their environmental impact and promote responsible sailing. We sat down with one of Sail Croatia’s skippers, Bruno Novotny, to discuss the biggest challenges, opportunities and practical solutions for fostering a more sustainable industry.

Q: What are some of the biggest challenges skippers face today regarding sustainability?

Bruno: One of the biggest challenges is onboard waste management. The average waste production per person continues to rise, making it crucial for skippers to take the lead. Through proper crew education during briefings and by setting an example, waste can be significantly reduced. A cleaner, more sustainable sailing experience benefits everyone - guests, crew, and the environment alike.

Q: How do you see sustainability shaping the future of the industry?

Bruno: Sustainability will be at the heart of the industry’s future. More travellers are actively seeking eco-conscious experiences, and regulations will only get stricter. Beyond being the right thing to do, protecting the environment is essential for keeping nautical tourism alive. If we don’t take action now, we risk losing the very ecosystems that make this industry possible.

Q: How could a new online course on sustainability for skippers help in your day-to-day work?

Bruno: A course like this can provide practical knowledge on waste management, reducing fuel consumption, and operating in harmony with marine life. It could also introduce the latest green technologies and teach skippers how to communicate sustainable practices to guests. For my crew, staying updated on best practices is key to running an efficient and environmentally responsible operation.

Q: What is the role of skippers in influencing broader industry practices toward sustainability?

Bruno: Skippers are on the frontlines - we set the example for tourists, crews and even other charter companies. By educating guests on responsible behaviour, promoting eco-friendly navigation, and choosing sustainable suppliers, we can drive change from the ground up. Our choices influence policies, business practices and the expectations of the next generation of sailors.

Q: Have you seen real changes from implementing sustainable practices? If not, what do you think is holding the industry back?

Bruno: One of the most significant impacts I’ve seen is improved fuel efficiency. Small changes, such as better engine load management and efficient route planning, can make a huge difference. However, the biggest obstacle in our industry is simply a lack of knowledge. Many people want to be more sustainable but don’t know where to start.

Q: Who do you think is responsible for ensuring a more sustainable industry - charter companies, policymakers, or skippers?

Bruno: It is undoubtedly a shared responsibility. Charter companies must equip their fleets with sustainable technology and educate their clients, while policymakers should enforce stricter environmental regulations. Skippers and crews must lead by example, and tourists must respect local communities and the environment they visit. Only by working together can we create meaningful change.

Q: What are some key lessons from the new sustainability course that every skipper should know?

Bruno: Every skipper should understand how to minimise fuel consumption through smarter navigation, the importance of proper waste disposal and eco-friendly products, sustainable anchoring techniques to avoid damaging marine habitats and how to educate guests on preserving marine ecosystems. But most importantly, every skipper should learn to respect nature, as it is our most valuable resource!

Q: What changes would you like to see in the industry regarding sustainability, and how could courses like this help?

Bruno: As someone who grew up on an island and is currently completing a master's degree in the Department of Geography, I have a unique perspective. The most important change I would like to see is a shift in mindset. Too many people take our beautiful natural environment for granted when in reality, we must actively work to protect and preserve it. Courses like this are game-changers, equipping skippers with the knowledge and tools needed to drive these changes forward.

Q: If all skippers in Croatia were educated on sustainability, how would that impact the industry?

Bruno: We’d see cleaner waters, healthier marine ecosystems, and a more responsible tourism industry. Croatia’s beauty is what attracts sailors - protecting it ensures long-term success for the industry. It would also position Croatia as a leader in sustainable nautical tourism, attracting more eco-conscious travellers.

Q: Do you think companies have a responsibility to educate their staff on sustainability?

Bruno: Absolutely. Sustainability should be a core part of training, just like safety procedures. If companies expect skippers and crew to operate responsibly, they must provide the tools and education to do so. A well-trained crew means better environmental practices, happier guests, and a more sustainable business overall.

For those in the yacht charter and maritime sectors, understanding sustainability is becoming increasingly important. Green Sail’s Sustainability for Skippers and Crew Management Course offers practical insights into waste reduction, fuel efficiency, and eco-friendly sailing practices.
